When I was a little girl, my sister Heidi and I would wait about 10 minutes after lights out at bedtime to turn those lights back on! And we would read all night, or until our little eyes couldn't stay open another minute. When I finish reading a good book, I feel like I've lost a friend. This site is a place where I can keep track of my friends, remember them, and look forward to those I want to get to know. Browse my site, read my reviews, add your own comments, and most of all, get reading!

1995 Newbery Medal Winner

Walk Two Moons
by Sharon Creech
pages

This is story within a story within a story. I'm calling it story lasagna. Lots of layers of warm deliciousness.

You read a story about a teenage girl, Sal Tree Hiddle, who is telling a story about another teenage girl, Phoebe. Their lives are similar, and in the telling of Phoebe's story, Sal comes to terms with things that have happened in her own life. You also get a bonus story of Sal's sweet and quirky grandparents.

Sal's mother had left about a year earlier and had taken a bus to Idaho. Her grandparents take her by car to see her mother in Idaho. To help pass the time on their 7 day trip, Sal tells the story of Phoebe to her grandparents. The story Sal tells her grandparents is filled with lunatics, cryptic notes, mystery, heartache, love and laughter.

Although Sharon Creech tries to keep the ending a surprise, I had a pretty good idea what was going to happen (although I hoped and hoped I was wrong.) A few of the twists and turns in the story were unexpected, and kept the story interesting. It is an adventure, and not just a physical adventure, but also an emotional one. I'm always up for a good emotional roller coaster ride.

I read this story in a couple of nights and enjoyed every minute. I laughed, I cried, I wished I was related to Sal's grandparents.
